Drama

Drama is the expression and exploration of personal, cultural and social worlds through role and situation that engages, entertains and challenges. Students create meaning as drama makers, performers and audiences as they enjoy and analyse their own and others’ stories and points of view. Like all art forms, drama has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, excite the imagination and encourage students to reach their creative and expressive potential.


 

Drama enables students to imagine and participate in exploration of their worlds, individually and collaboratively. Students actively use body, gesture, movement, voice and language, taking on roles to explore and depict real and imagined worlds. They create, rehearse, perform and respond using the elements and conventions of drama and emerging and existing technologies available to them.

 

NB: In Grade 7 all students will study Drama for half of the year.  In Grades 8-10, Drama  becomes an Optional subject.

 

Grade 8 Drama

Students learn improvisation, games play and scene work, as well as an introduction to puppetry and use of light and sound and continue to develop their skills from Grade 7. Students are also involved in related arts exercises which incorporate design elements such as set, light, multimedia and make up.

 

Grade 9 & 10 Drama

Students will explore the techniques of drama involving emphasis on all aspects of performance including technical requirements such as light and sound and the inclusion of multimedia as a performance tool. Students will need to show commitment and be prepared to share work with a variety of audiences. Use of puppetry and shadow work will also feature in the presentation of all work.

 

Drama as Theatre Education (Grades 9 & 10)
This course is offered to students with a keen desire to present live theatre. The course provides opportunities for students to perform lengthier devised or scripted pieces to the wider community, including adult and neighbouring school audiences, depending on the discretion of the teacher.
